Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, in 193 7. Jozef studied at the College of Applied Arts and Design in Bratislava from 1956 to 1962. In 1984 he was a guest professor at the College of Applied Arts in Vienna, and from 1990 to 1994 a consultant at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. At the same Academy he was appointed Professor and Chair of Sculpture in 1994. He has been exhibiting his work since 1965 in numerous shows in Bmo, Prague, Bratislava, Vienna, Dusseldorf, Turin, Zagreb, Essen, Hague, Paris, Basel, Hamburg, Passau, Moscow, Venice (as the representative of Slovakia at the 46th Venetian Biennial) as well as many group shows across the world. His works are held in prominent museum collections such as Slovakian national galleries, museums in Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Huston (USA), Seoul and Paris. He has received countless national awards, including the 6th Paris Biennial award in 1969, International Biennial of Graphic Design in Ljubljana in 1983 and Krakow 1984, Order of Matica Hrvatska, Order of Ludovik Stur, and others. He is considered to be one of the founders of modem Slovakian art, but his artistic output has contributed to the best achievements in modem sculpture internationally. His appearance on the artistic scene in 1960 opened new, unknown avenues for Slovakian sculpture, revealing from the start his starting point and his preoccupations -human destiny.
