Andrej Božić – Possible is Possible
2007 / mixed media on canvas / 70×90 cm
About the author:
He was born in 1944 in Zagreb. He is a self-taught painter. He has been exhibiting independently since 1989. He lives and works in Ptuj. He is a member of the Association of Slovenian Fine Arts Societies. He has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia. In the Slovenian art scene, he is a distinctly original artistic personality.
His painting is characterized by three key cycles. The watercolor cycle “Only Play Is Possible” from 2003 clearly reveals the painter’s tendency to experiment and to experience art as a game. During this period, he discovered the circle, ellipse, and spiral as fundamental symbols of his painterly expression.
In the later cycle with the enigmatic title “Possible, Possibly Not” (a name inspired by the book of the same name by Robert Fulghum), he paints with acrylic on canvas and creates spatial installations. During this period, the circle and circumference become the exclusive motifs of his artistic interest.
The cycle “Possible – is possible” (with allusions to Orwell’s novel “1984”) brings painting with features of social engagement and utopian visions of life in a totalitarian system. The author skillfully plays with formal artistic solutions on one side and symbolic interpretations on the other.
A characteristic square format with an inscribed circle and asymmetrical center allows the painting to be rotated, which opens up space for new associations and interpretations. This approach confirms his constant pursuit of ambiguity and interactivity in the artwork.
