Liao Zhanghong – Memory of the Agave and the Rock

She was born in 1965 in Guangzhou, China, and has been living and working in the Netherlands, in Vlaardingen, since 1995. She graduated from the Manchester School of Art in the United Kingdom in 1995. She has been a member of the renowned Pulchri Studio – an art organization in The Hague – since 1999, as well as a member of Kunstgebouwa South Netherlands, Kunstwerkt in Schiedam, and the artistic collective “Collectief De 13e Maand” from Rotterdam. Highly versatile, she has worked various jobs and held positions related to art and its teaching; she teaches Chinese calligraphy and painting, is a teacher and team leader in the Leentjebeur project in Vlaardingen, a member of numerous art committees, curator of the “China Exhibition” project at Pulchri Studio, and “China” – Stichting Kunstwerkt at Pand Paulusu in the Netherlands. She has taught art at the Hua Nan Shi Fang University in Guangzhou, China, and has been involved in design, photography, and dance, which is often part of her artistic performances. She has studied and held residencies in Spain (Valparaiso Foundation) and Ireland (Monaghan), and participated in numerous symposia in Uganda, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, and Poland. She has received several awards for her work. She is a multidisciplinary artist, employing all visual media from classical painting and drawing journals to video, installations, and performances in her practice. She approaches every new theme with creative seriousness, selecting new and appropriate media through which to best express it.
