About the author:

Born in 1959 in Zagreb where he also studied. He graduated from the Higher Textile School in clothing and textile design, and then enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, where he graduated in the class of prof. Zlatko Kauzlarić Atač. He has been exhibiting regularly since 1985. He is employed as the chief painter at the painting studio of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. He gained particular recognition for his scenography for the drama production “King Lear” (Brijuni, 2001). Since 2003, he has been an expert associate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.

Medvešek’s painting is characterized by portraits of female figures that refer to the works of old masters, showing the closeness of his poetics to the arts of antiquity, renaissance, and secession, infiltrating the medium of classical painting with everything that has happened from modern times to the present. His recent paintings also incorporate abstract forms of visual expression, reflected in the cycle “Homage to Istria.”
