Marijan Richter was born in 1957 in Zagreb, Croatia. He graduated in painting in 1983 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, in the class of Professor Raoul Goldoni. In addition to painting, he studied music as a scholarship student of the Zagreb Philharmonic. He earned his PhD in painting in 2013 at the same institution.

Richter has exhibited in over eighty exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including around forty solo exhibitions. His work is characterized by a distinctive and compelling poetics of constantly questioning the meaning of the artwork and artistic practice. He is the author of the art-scientific book Slika između izgleda i pogleda (Image Between Appearance and View). Several television features have been made about his artistic work.

Richter is an associate professor at the Department of Teacher Studies in Gospić, University of Zadar, where he teaches courses such as Methodology of Art Education, Exploration of Children’s Artistic Creativity, Animated Film, Comics and Illustration, and Contemporary Art Media. He participates in organizing student exhibitions and international symposia on art and visual culture.
