Sergije Mihić – Fish Ž
2001 / oil on canvas / 60×80 cm
About the author:
He was born in 1942 in Rijeka, where he began his artistic journey that would lead him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. He graduated in 1966, and in the same year became a member of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists, thereby officially entering the professional artistic community.
During his rich career, he held forty solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Croatia and abroad, which earned him various recognitions and awards. He still lives and works in Zagreb, where he has developed a distinctive artistic expression.
As Stanko Špoljarić highlighted in the exhibition catalog of 2001: “The fish are intimate and monumental. Even intimidating. Creatures bearing traces of the creator… They seem to me like Noah’s Ark. A ship under God’s guidance. Faith and hope before which and within which everyone can find their space for contemplation: Mihić as the artist, and every other passerby as a permanent or occasional traveler.”
Through his work, especially through the motifs of fish, Sergej Mihić creates profound metaphorical depictions that go beyond simple figurative representation. His fish become symbols of universal human experiences – faith, hope, but also existential fears. Through this distinctive visual language, Mihić achieves a balance between personal expression and collective symbolism, offering the viewer space for their own interpretation and reflection. His work, rooted in the Croatian visual tradition, simultaneously carries a universal message that resonates worldwide.
