Dinko Svoboda (1924 – 2020) was a prominent Croatian theatre and opera director and painter, who left an indelible mark on Rijeka’s and Croatian culture. Born in Rijeka, he spent most of his life in the city, where he built a significant artistic and pedagogical career.

Svoboda began his professional career in theatre, working on directorial sketches, set designs, costumes, and props, later becoming a successful opera director. He was a member of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists Rijeka from its inception and frequently served as its president. His first public appearance was in 1962, and he held his first major solo exhibition in 1966 at the small hall in Rijeka. He held over 100 solo exhibitions and more than 300 group exhibitions both domestically and internationally, primarily in Switzerland and Germany.

His painting oeuvre encompasses motifs of Adriatic flora and fauna, with a particular focus on the underwater world. Even in his later years, when he experienced vision impairment, he continued to create, employing collage techniques to better control shapes and materials. His works often carried symbolic messages and social commentary, and he donated many paintings to humanitarian organizations and institutions.
